At Drive 2013, Andy challenged church leaders to consider how accessible and irresistible they were making the message of Jesus for unchurched people. Perhaps this brief reminder will be a useful filter for you today.

Creating Irresistible Environments

Leading people to follow Jesus involves more than giving them information—especially when unbelievers are in the audience. It’s not enough that your content is true. It should also be helpful.

True content...

may get head nods or “amens” of agreement. But unless the truth is also actionable, it will be filed away or forgotten altogether by the time your audience has made it to the parking lot.

Helpful content...

addresses the way people think and live. It challenges them to see and experience the world around them differently. It enters into their lives and addresses their felt needs. This approach brings the gospel to life for people. It helps them see Jesus’ relevance in their lives.

Moving your message from merely true to true + helpful

Moving your message from merely true to true + helpful is like offering unbelievers a test drive. You don’t have to believe this yet, but give it a try and see if your life isn’t better for it.

James gives us an example of this as he talks about Abraham, the very first man of faith. "You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did." (James 2:22)

James suggests that Abraham’s faith finally stuck when he took it for a test drive—or put it into action.

Is your message merely true?

So in your children’s environments, in your youth group, in your Sunday sermon, is your message merely true? Or are you pushing yourself to make it helpful as well?
