Everyone in the pews for your Christmas services will know the story of Cinderella. We all do, right down to the first four words: Once upon a time . . .
Those words don’t appear in the story of the nativity. But for many people, the story of Jesus’ birth may as well start that way. Angelic announcements, an evil king, and a magical star sound more like pieces of a fairy tale than an account of history.
And yet . . .
When we read Matthew and Luke’s accounts of the Christmas story, they are deeply grounded in historical context.
Is that a better way to talk about the birth of Christ?
We think so.
